Is laminated wood the building material of the future?

The construction sector has a negative impact on the environment and on the carbon footprint, since the vast majority of materials used produce carbon emissions.

Currently, more sustainable materials such as wood are beginning to be promoted, which, thanks to new technologies, have the ability to replace other materials. Today we are going to talk about laminated wood, one of the possible construction materials of the future.

What is laminated wood?

Laminated lumber is a structural lumber product made up of different layers of wood. Well, it consists of the union of wooden boards through the different ends and their faces; the fibers of these parts are joined in the same direction and it is possible to manufacture a single wooden element that works as a longitudinal structural unit.

To produce laminated wood, the first step is to classify and chop dry wood, then, with the different pieces, pieces of different lengths are made according to the structure to be built.

For the adherence of the different sheets of wood, it is necessary that they be joined in such a way that the growth rings, that is, the relief that is formed in each sheet of wood, is opposed to the previous one. In this way, the laminated wood will be strong and stable.

Use of laminated wood:

Laminated wood is used for large and spacious structures since its lightness brings great benefits. For example in sports centers, theaters, auditoriums, etc.

On the other hand, it is a cheaper material than others and that is why it is also used in buildings and homes.

This material offers great flexibility that allows architectural creations without limits of shapes and resistance. In addition, it acts as a thermal, acoustic and electrical insulator, managing to achieve comfortable spaces.

For example, it can be used both in large interior and exterior structures, as well as for the manufacture of common furniture (tables, doors, stairs, etc.). On the other hand, it is a perfect wood for the construction of structural beams thanks to its resistance and versatility.

Advantages of laminated wood:

  • It is a light and flexible material.
  • It offers great versatility, makes it possible to carry out designs with different structures, curves, lengths and can be easily adapted.
  • It is a sustainable material.
  • It has a lot of resistance despite the fact that the pieces have a very light weight.
  • Its manufacturing process allows laminated wood to be adapted to each type of construction.
  • Ease of assembly.

Disadvantages of laminated wood:

  • It requires specific and professional knowledge for its manufacture.
  • It may be more expensive than wood.
  • It is a material that can be damaged, in other words, it is necessary to work this wood well.
