Celebrating World Wood Day

March 21 is World Wood Day, coinciding with the International Day of Forests and very close to World Water Day, which is celebrated the following day. This proximity is no coincidence: all three days remind us of the importance of conserving natural resources and promoting sustainable practices for the future of the planet.

World Wood Day was celebrated for the first time in 2013 in Tanzania, thanks to the initiative of the World Wood Day Foundation, a non-profit organization founded in California. Its main goal is to highlight wood as a renewable and environmentally friendly material, as well as to promote awareness of its responsible use in construction, design, and everyday life.

Every year, the foundation organizes an international event that moves to different countries to bring wood culture closer to various regions of the world. Past editions have taken place in countries such as China, Turkey, and Nepal, and include activities as diverse as tree planting, design workshops, conferences, exhibitions, and concerts.

A world without wood would be unimaginable

It is hard to imagine a world without wood. This material is so present in our daily lives that we often don’t even realize its importance. Structurally, wood is a key element in construction: it is used in roofs, pergolas, doors, windows, and frameworks. Without wood, we would have to turn to alternative materials that are often more expensive and less sustainable.

It is also essential in furniture: tables, chairs, beds, cabinets, and shelves are mostly made of wood. Its absence would not only affect functionality but also the aesthetics and the sense of comfort within a home. Wood brings warmth, depth, and a natural touch that is hard to replicate with artificial materials.

Another important case is tools. Many of them, such as hammers and axes, have wooden handles, which makes them easier and more practical to use.

And last but not least, without wood, Pallars Fustes would not exist! In short, wood is not just another material; it is an essential part of our lives and culture.
